Axe Attack - Clean Up

Did a lot more tweaking and cleaning up. Deleted a bunch of keys frames in some areas to rework the entire portion. I also added some anticipation before he stands up after the swing to get a bit more weight into the scene.

Okay, this morning I popped the curves to spline and started cleaning up and tweaking things out. Bryan mentioned that he didn't feel the weight and power so I tried to work that some more. I dropped his body a bit sooner before his arm comes down and made his leading shoulder/arm swing through a bit faster before the axe arm come down.

The ending feels a bit slow to me, but since I've been told my stuff is too fast I'm going to keep it for now and see what crits I get back on it.

*Edit: Looking over it some more, the head is a bit hitchy. Going to have to spend some more time on that.

Got some feedback on the other animation so I reworked the animation. My bro pointed out that generally you keep your weapon away from the target instead of point at them (unless you're fencing), and that my animations tend to be a little fast.

Flour Sac fun!

Found this pretty awesome Flour Sac rig for Maya and wanted to mess around with some of the basic principles of animation, and to get some life into an inanimate object.

Here is the animation at this stage. The timing and spacing are down, I just have to add in some more "life" to the character and tweak out the end. I'm thinking that it may need another bounce.

Thanks for the comments guys! This one has been a lot of fun to make. It has forced me to learn about some new things about maya (glow maps, spec maps, and shaders) but its all well worth it. I'm suffering from not spending enough time in the design phase to really nail down the armor design. I focused a bit to much on the modeling part. With that, I ended up going back and forth a lot and wasting time not moving the project forward.

I've finally gone with this design (helmet, shoulder armor and sword not shown). For those that play WoW, my idea is that this armor set is for the Unholy talent tree. In this tree you focus on summoning ghouls. And Ghouls in the game having lots of mummy wrapping and buckles, so I wanted to echo that in my design.

I have a lot more to do but thought this would be good to show for now.

Game Artisan's is having a competition sponsored by Blizzard and I decided to put the Crow Shaman on hold for about two weeks while I work on my entry.

The rules are that you have to design your own Death Knight which is a Hero class from their new expansion. Mine is a male Orc and I'm going for this Angel of Death motif. Which means wings and stuff. On his shoulder pads I'll be modeling small statues of the Angel. Looks cool in my head anyways hahah.

Since the idea for the character is that its a PC for a MMO I wanted the back to have the most visual interest, and so it got the most polygons. Tris are at 2364.

Still working to get more values into this painting. I've always had the problem of being afraid of going to dark. I'm not sure what keeps me from doing so. I'm still struggling to get over it and that's what I'm hoping this turn around will do for me.

Shored up the back on the side view. Made the face line up better and started seperating the values in the face a lot more. Though really I should be going over the hole figure at one time and just pulling out my darks. That's what I'll do next. Can't get bogged down on the little stuff just yet.

I got a new idea for the Vampire. I felt that the Victorian era was a bit played out and it struck me that I haven't seen many Flapper Girl vampires. So with that in mind I got a ton of reference and came up with these 12 dress ideas.

This website was shown to me by a friend and its pretty sweet for those of us who find it hard to get out to life drawing sessions.

It helps simulate a normal drawing life drawing session by cycling through these 3D models in different poses. You can do 10 sec, 30 sec etc poses. My only issue with it is that the models don't have "skin", there are no overweight models and the breasts on the females don't stretch according to how the arms are raised. But for just needing to get warmed up, not a bad deal.

Nothing beats a live model though.

The Ventrue: Dress Designs

I threw down these thumbnails today and just tried to come up with as many designs as possible. I'm in a challenge here because it needs to be realistic, not cheesy, but something cool. So I don't know where that line is of 'to much'.

The first two are the 24 I drew. The last one I got by accident when I kept both of the layers on at the same time. I actually end up getting some really neat designs by combining the two layers. I may play around some more with putting two dresses together and see what comes out of it.

The Ventrue

I'm starting on a new project. Over the next several weeks I'll be developing a vampire character. The parameters I've placed on myself are that the character is female, sexy (not cheesy), and based on the Vampire Clan Ventrue.

I've done a few drawings real quick to familiarize myself with some fashion poses and work out some quick dress ideas I had floating in my head. Now I'm going to be taking this template body and do very quick dress paintings on top of it. I'll be focusing on shape and design at this stage. No real details.

Once the character design stage is complete, I'll make a turn around and then model her in Maya. Rig the character for animation, and then do some game style animations for her.

This should be a real challenge, but I'm looking to have a lot of fun with it.

Before I draw the character sheet I wanted to put this guy in an action shot. Something that didn't really focus on the clothing as much as it does on the mood or characterization of the... character. What I'll do is also digitally paint this image so I can get an idea of what colors I want to use when I texture map him.

After this will be the character turn around and I'll post that when its finished. Then the next step is modeling!

All of these past drawings have been on newspaper print using graphite, and a Faber Castell soft grease pencil to punch out some areas of interest.

Nailing down the costume

I feel I've pretty much nailed down the costume of the character. I want to integrate a few things from the other design into this one.

I'll do one final image of the character with the costume and then I'll move onto the character turn around to start modeling.

*Update I later drew this back shot so I could get an idea of what the mantel would look like from behind and also wanted to do a shot of what the Shaman is wearing underneath the mantel. Okay, for real though; next drawing will be of the full character.

Did some more drawings trying to find this Orc character. Its been rough trying to make something as generic and well known like the Orc and make it unique, while still trying to have that Orc feel. For these drawings I was focused mostly on the body preportions and less on the face. I'm liking the "club" like arms and have an idea of what to do with those that I'm going to play around with a bit more.

Orcs hate updates!

First, I'm starting to work on my own concepts for an Orc. It tough to redesign such a cliche as that creature and still have it be recognized on sight as an Orc. I suppose thats the challenge. So far I'm not super happy with the heads, but I think I'm on the right track with the body style (the two on the bottom right). The head with the giant tusks coming straight out of his jaw seems most interesting so far.

The goal for this is to design the character. Model and then texture the character. And finally rig it for animation and animate the character's different in game actions. I want to experience the entire pipeline for a character.

Update on the Beholder. I finally got around to painting him and this is the underpainting that the color will be put on top of. You can go here to see the other entries for the contest.

Game Modeling Final

This is just the work in progress for my final in Game Modeling. The theme is sci-fi and we're supposed to design and model an old man who is on this ancient moon, collecting artifacts to fuel an age reducing machine.

Hammered out the recoloring for the Priest. I needed some more images for my flatbook so I figured he'd be a good one to add. At one point I started playing around with different filters and got that orange one and thought it was pretty interesting. Feels like a dynamic panel from a comic page, where everything goes monochrome.

Here's another model I started in my Game Modeling class. This time the teacher gave us all the same character and we had 4 hours to design it, model it, and layout the UVs. Obviously that was unrealistic but it was designed to be a speed test. He wanted to see how much we could get done in that time.

I only got to the point of putting the head on the body. Not wanting to leave it at that, I came home and finished it up in another 2 hours and this is the final model. I'll be texturing him shortly.

The Poly count is 1328.

The Final texture

Just wanted to post the final version of the character model and texture paint. For my first crack at a full texture paint on a model I think it came out really well.

What's really awesome is that to make this composite I used Photoshop CS3's capability of importing in 3D models that you are then able to rotate around into position. Really awesome stuff. The only issue I've found so far is that it can't display the alpha map on the "skirt". Oh well.

Some concept work

I'm taking a Game Modeling class in my final quarter and the teacher has asked us to design a "Modern Warrior", some of the restrictions were that he character could not have a gun, a bladed weapon, and leave the fantasy out of it. So I started thinking about the villain from "No Country for Old Men". He used an air gun to kill with, a seemingly normal item turned into a deadly weapon.

For some reason a dockworker popped into my head and I started researching what equipment they use. I found one, which is a vice called a Pallet Puller. When the chain is pulled on the end it closes the vice. Not a fun thing to be caught in. In addition, you can swing it like a flail. The other item was called a Dock Shock. Its a metal baton with a rope that goes through holes on either end and can be pulled taught. It doubles as a baton and a strangulation device. What I love about these "weapons" is that they're unassuming and have multiple purposes.

His clothing, I decided on a thick one piece that the workers wear to keep out the rain and water. Its padded which adds a bit of protection from blunt weapons and could be helpful against knives. Not to mention, should he get any blood on it the clothing is easily removable and disposable.

Now for Batman: I'm working on an animated version based off the Adam West costume and body type. Normal dude, in a crappy costume. I think I'm headed in some good directions and the silhouettes helped out a lot. I'll keep hammering away at it and be posting some more designs later.

Did a quick study this morning of Adam West as Batman. I love this costume because of how hysterical it is. He wasn't built, just a kind of fit guy. And the mask is fantastic! Drawn on eyebrows, what more could you ask for? Eat your heart out Christian Bayle.

I have plans for this costume and body type, so keep a look out for another update.

Been working on some more character design/clothing designs for the game I'm doing at work. Its a kids game so things a very large and disproportioned, and a little silly. It also can take place in any time period or area in the world so I'm open to doing anything I want with the characters clothing so I'm having a blast with it. These two pages are Feudal Japan and Medieval inspired.

My brothers childrens book

Many years ago my brother started work on a childrens book idea. I had made some character designs then and we started illustrating it. Well time took over and the project got put to the side.

No longer. He has started work on it again and asked me for those original sketches of the characters. I looked for them but couldn't find them. Then I thought, "Why give him drawings I did before I even started school. Lets draw some new ones!" And I busted these out real quick. Not the final designs, but I'm already digging the direction its headed in.

If I find the originals I'll post them here besides these new drawings so you can see just how far I've come.

So today was portfolio review and I got my ass REAMED by my proffs. I can see what they were saying and I can agree. I didn't put my best into the reel and I need to get it up to my level. Sometimes it feels like my job is keeping me from putting in my all.

With that said, my resolve has been steeled and I'm ready to kick some butt. These are my new designs for my identity package and I think they are looking pretty hot. The run cycle in the background really pulls things together. Any comments are welcome.

This is a group of stuff I did last week. The Zombie stuff was inspired by another groups project in my Business Fundamentals class. Their idea had so much life to it that it instantly sparked my imagination and I had to draw these characters. I showed it to one of the members and she loved it.

The Spider-man sketch was done so I could find a pose I wanted to draw for a birthday present for my fiance. She's crazy for Spider-man. This was the pose I liked the most and I fleshed it out and inked it. I'll get around to scanning that one later.

While looking at other pencil tests on Youtube I ran across this gentlelady's pencil test. It's very beautiful. Reading how she did it, she mentions this program called Plastic Animation Paper. There is a free copy as well as two retail versions. Naturally the Pro version has more bells and whistles. The things I really want. But, I guess I'll check out the free version.

So far it looks pretty neat. A fun way to do Pencil Tests that is for sure. Though I don't think you're going to be doing any finished work with the free version. Even the Pro version doesn't do color, according to their site that is best left for other programs.

Brick Design - Final w/ Color *tweak tweak

Here is the final design for Brick Bouser. I was looking at all of the guys that were World's Strongest Men competitors and they have this very unique body shape when wearing their back brace. It pushes there torso up and looks rather humorous. So I wanted to capture that in him and I feel like I nailed it.

My next bit before I start animating him is finalizing the colors of the outfits and get a better design for the hands.

Been working on my designs for Brick still and threw down 15 different bodies designs. Some may look similar, thats because I was also playing with the shapes within the general design. Playing between rounded and square edges etc. Maybe just making the chest a bit wider or the stance shorter.

So far I'm leaning towards the first one on third row and the second one on the last row. Of course that one reminds me of a gym coach for some reason. Though it might not be a bad idea.

This design has been stupid challenging. And I still have a while to go before its finalized.
